If the glimpse of sunshine today has made you start thinking about summer escapes then let me share a secret with you. North Barn, near Dittisham, in Devon. It is a brilliant little hidey hole for families or romantics looking for a few days away to regroup or fall in love all over again. If that doesn’t happen then you will probably fall in love with the landscape around you anyway, so there’s always plan B to fall back on.
The barn is decorated with watery colours and tribal textiles making it a refreshing mix of laid back cool and ethnic. But it’s not that surprising as the owners are a talented, resourceful and creative duo. Pedro is a highly acclaimed architect who works from his studio on top of the boathouse. As if that wasn’t idyllic enough the boathouse contains a genuine Venetian taxi, ready for leisurely trips to the pub up the river. Jilly has her studio in another converted barn, and while you are there take the time to admire her incredible wood sculptures. They are hard to resist www.jillysuttonsculpture.com.
Go to Blackpool Sands for a good beach and cafe and eat at the restaurant at Sharpham Vineyard.
Here are a few pictures that I snapped while we were there, but you can find much better pics on Sawdays and on Air BnB where you can book this hidden gem.
