I discovered Schizanthus pinnatus (nicknames include Angel Wings and Butterfly Orchid) when I visited Oare House earlier in the spring. A friend was working there and persuaded me to take a tray while carefully reminding me to stake them once planted out after the frosts had passed. They are such thrilling flowers. I kept some in the greenhouse in terracotta pots to take into the house once flowering and planted others into my cut flower bed so that once I’ve cut everything else down there’s still some lovely things to look at. They last well in the vase as cut flowers but they are so stunning in situ its very hard to take the scissors to them!
suttons.co.uk sell a mixed seed that you can plant early next spring or, if you can’t wait, you can still plant in August/ September in an unheated greenhouse to produce a spring pot plant.
