Henny Tate is an artist and gardener who uses her practice as a way to explore the natural world. Through her botanical paintings and linocuts, she creates a bridge between house and garden, celebrating the flowers, weeds and seedheads that often go unnoticed. Her approach is rooted in a lifelong passion for plants, growing, studying and living alongside them. 

For Henny, making art is a way of paying attention. Every work begins with gathering from nature and making studies, looking closely at the details that might otherwise be missed. This sensitivity to the natural world was nurtured from an early age, growing up in a family of wild-loving creatives, and has developed through years of gardening and working with plants. 

Having trained at the English Gardening School, she brings a gardener’s knowledge to her artistic practice, with a deep understanding of plants and seasonality. Her work is not intended as a traditional botanical illustration, but as an interpretation of the natural world, drawing on influences that range from Japanese woodblocks to Indian botanical painting.  

From her studio in Wiltshire, Henny works primarily with natural inks, handmade papers sourced from Bhutan and cotton rag papers. Her work is defined by an elegant simplicity and has been exhibited at Made in Pewsey in Wiltshire, No.6 Bruton High Street in Somerset as part of a sell-out show with her photographer sister Emma Lewis, and at Knepp Wilding Estate in Sussex.
